RP Society started its activities in 2000 thank to the efforts extended by a number of charity donors, physicians, and other interested individuals. This society was registered in 2001 and its activities entered a new and more serious phase.
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a group of eye problems that causes severe vision impairment due to the progressive degeneration of the rod photoreceptor cells in the retina followed by the deterioration of cone photoreceptor cells.
Major symptoms of this disease include:
- Nyctalopia(night blindness) and defective light-dark adaptations
- Progressive tunnel vision
- In certain cases particularly the advanced cases, central visual disorder
Until now more than 5000 patients affected by this disorder have been identified in Iran who enjoy counseling and medical services provided by the society every year.
